Moving Image Award

Congratulations to brother team Will and Matt Burrard-Lucas, who won the 2011 Moving Image Award for their film Migration.

In 2011 we introduced the Moving Image Award to the Sony World Photography Awards programme. We recognise that a technological revolution has occurred over the last few years: for the first time, photographers are able to shoot – on the same camera – both stills and high quality moving images with sound.

Photographic storytellers now have a whole new world of possibilities – and need new skills to integrate into their art.

The Moving Image Award seeks to capture the evolving relationship between still and moving imagery: liberating the frozen moment and combining the power of stills with film, graphics, sound and the voice of the subjects. For those photographers so far engaged in story telling, sound offers both possibilities and challenges.

This new language and format is still very much in its infancy. Judges look for an approach that combines the unique strengths of the different media forms and brings them together in a powerful interpretation that goes beyond form and into the realm of memorable narrative and experience.
