As Picture Editor at The Guardian and 2013 Honorary Judge for the Sony World Photography Awards, Fiona Shields has over 20 years of experience in photojournalism. Tens of thousands of images from around the world pass through her department daily as she crafts The Guardian newspaper and Guardian Unlimited.
Originally trained as a print journalist, Fiona turned towards photojournalism in the early days of electronic picture desks. Following her work for several UK newspapers, including The Daily Mail and The Observer, Fiona joined the Guardian in 1994, and became Picture Editor in 2009. She has worked on some of the world’s largest stories over the past two decades, including the sudden death of the Princess of Wales, the attacks of 9/11, as well as worldwide conflicts including the wars in Bosnia, Iraq, Afghanistan, and the recent turbulence of the Arab Spring.
