Working with NGO’s and Making a Difference with Photography

Tuesday 1th March 2011 – Tuesday 8th March 2011, Kolkata, India.

This workshop provides photographers with the opportunity to intensively work with an NGO based in Kolkata, India to produce imagery that can make a difference and result in positive social change.

Participants will hit the ground running and should be prepared to work hard. Arrangements are being made with a range of NGO's who are eager for photographers to document their work. These NGO’s work on many diverse subjects, including:

  • Street children
  • Rickshaw pullers
  • HIV/AIDS
  • Medical outreach for slum dwellers
  • Microcredit
  • Child labour
  • Old age
  • Drug addiction

The workshop will be lead by the award-winning photographer Jonathan Torgovnik. Participants will be able to draw on Jonathan's wealth of experience in humanitarian photography that will prove invaluable in producing powerful photographs for your NGO.

The aim of this one-week workshop is to introduce participants to the basics of how to work with an NGO and produce imagery tailored to their needs. Consequently, we are looking for experienced photographers who can demonstrate their photographic skills with a strong portfolio and have a commitment to work not for profit organisations.

Applicants should ideally possess the following skill set – although, all of these skills are not necessarily required as we will judge each application on its individual merits.

  • An ability to work professionally, creatively and sensitively with disenfranchised people.
  • A portfolio that includes a selection of portraits.
  • A portfolio that contains a reportage element.
  • Experience with sound recording and other multimedia experience is useful but, not essential.

Portfolios will be assessed via your websites only.

Participants must be competent photographers who are prepared to spend much time in difficult and challenging conditions in which you may see the worst of humanity.

Please note that this is a digital only course, therefore, participants will need all equipment they would normally use, including:

  • Digital camera and other associated equipment.
  • Laptop.
  • If applicable, sound and/or video recording equipment and appropriate editing software. We would recommend that you have a full and competent understanding of any such equipment before you start using it in the field.
  • Power adaptors etc.

Visa

Participants are required to get a visa in order to enter India. We strongly recommend you apply for a tourist visa.

Course Plan

Wednesday 2th March 2010 – Wednesday 9th March 2010.

The workshops will be based at the Fairlawn Hotel in Kolkata.

Participants should aim to arrive by Tuesday 1th March at the very latest in order to avoid jet lag and get themselves settled in the hotel.

Unless otherwise state all lectures will take place at the Fairlawn Hotel.

If you are interested in applying for one of the two free places offered by Dadvid Graham and WPO at the Changing Ideas workshop, please email one of your photographs and a supporting statement to David Graham – david@changingideas.org.
