Bio

Paul Hindmarsh, the driving force and founder of Paul Hindmarsh Photography has led an interesting career that has taken him to the four corners of the world.

Starting his career in the Merchant Navy at 16 as a Navigating Cadet, he spent his first weeks’ wages on an Olympus Trip camera. “I bought it so that I could make a record of where I travelled in the world. From time to time, I still look at those photos and they bring back great memories,” says Paul. “That’s the power of photography: making memories.”

To pass the time off-duty, Paul took up the guitar, which became an all-consuming passion. This led to him leaving the Navy and moving to California to study at the Musicians Institute in Hollywood. He lived just behind the Chinese Theatre. “That was an interesting time,” he recalls. “Quite frequently, Hollywood Boulevard would be closed whilst a film premiere went on across the road. I even saw Arnold Schwarzenegger having his star put on the Walk of Fame one afternoon!

“Many well known artists visited the school, and I worked as an intern with the school studio. I got to photograph a gig by Albert Lee, who was Eric Clapton’s guitarist for several years.”

Continuing his interests in photography and music, Paul returned to the UK. Landing a job with a survival equipment manufacturer led him to taking his first commercial pictures; more recently, he photographed a major construction project over a three-year period.

Now a full-time professional photographer, Paul specialises in social, commercial, portrait, wedding and architectural photography. Paul is a Category Winner for the 2010 Cardiff Photomarathon, and he is working towards his Licentiate qualification with the British Institute of Professional Photography.
