Playing the incredible game of light

Ueli Frischknecht is a photographer based in Switzerland. We featured a selection of his work on the @worldphotoorg feed last week and caught up with him to find out more about his amazing array of travel images.

Hi Ueli, please introduce yourself and your photography to our audience

My name is Ueli Frischknecht, I am a 33-year-old photographer from Switzerland. Growing up in a country with beautiful green hills, snowy mountain tops and stunning views all over, it is almost obvious that I got a passion for the outdoors. Spending time outside and connecting with nature makes me feel alive, that's why I specialized in travel, adventure and landscape photography. But I always keep an open eye for everything around me. Beauty can be found anywhere, like in architecture, wildlife or in a human smile.

Tell us about the series of images we featured. Do you have a favourite, and why?

Well, that's a difficult question. It's not easy for me to pick one favorite image, because with each one of those I remember a very special moment of my past year of travel. If it had to be one, I'd probably pick sunrise at Tegallalang rice terraces in Bali, Indonesia as I have never seen such a magical light before. Just for a brief moment, the sun was shining through the palm trees and created an incredible game of light. Sun rays and sunbeams everywhere! It was a goosebumps moment for sure!

Why photography? What does the medium mean to you?

Photography means a lot to me. My camera was the one thing that started taking me out of bed at 4 in the mornings to witness incredible sunrises and helped me to truly enjoy nature and our world we live in. Also, I might not be the greatest speaker, but I have a lot I want to share with the world. Photography gives me the opportunity to visually express myself and let the images speak for themselves.

Do you have a photographic philosophy?

For me, photography has a lot to do with feelings. It is definitely more than just freezing a certain moment in time. To capture the perfect image, I like to dive into my surroundings, listening to the sounds and having an open eye for colors, structures, and the different elements. Photography is the art of capturing the feelings of a certain moment.

What inspires you?

There are lots of things in my daily life that inspire me, but my biggest inspiration is nature itself.
