The Current of the Pacific Ocean - Delaney Allen

Delaney Allen is an American photographer investigating self-exploration. Incorporating the use of self-portraiture, still-life and landscape photography, Allen forms "an atmosphere around familiar, personal emotions". We featured him for a week on the @worldphotoorg Instagram feed.

Hi Delaney. Tell us about the series of images we featured on the @worldphotoorg feed

These are various images shot between 2010 to the current of the Pacific Ocean along the Oregon coast. I visit it quite often with the curiosity to just watch as it plays out. I feel it's the place I revisit the most.

Do you have a favourite, and why?

The image shot at dusk. That one was an experiment for me trying to take the surroundings and make them a bit more otherworldly in a sense. I had set up a flash out in front of me and just waited for the right waves to come in. I only got about 4 shots before it got too dark to keep working but I was satisfied with a new approach to photographing nature.

Why photography?

It's just the tool I feel most comfortable with. I try to expand beyond it when creating bodies of work and installations for shows. I don't want to limit myself to just photography but at this point, but feel it's my strongest suit.

Do you have a photographic philosophy?

My own philosophy is to engage with the medium in a way that I'm not seeing others do. I think naturally I might view things in a little bit of a different way but I also know when it comes to editing to try to differ from any sort of trends that might be going on.

What are you currently working on?

I just wrapped a new body of work in 2016 and have taken a brief break from starting a new one. At this point, I'm researching before moving on with the next completed series that I'm anticipating a 2018 release for.
