The Open competition seeks the true amateur - the lover of photography - to enter a single image, capturing that perfect moment.
All ages and levels of expertise are welcomed in this competition where image is everything and imagination is the only necessary ingredient.
Whether your passion is animals, places, people, sport, or travel, you could be the next to win $5,000 and a trip to the next Sony World Photography Awards ceremony and World Photography Festival in London!

Entering & Judging
The Submission and Judging Process:
- Step One – Register, for free, and become a proud new member of the World Photography Organisation.
- Step Two – Upload your Images into your portfolio
- Step Three - Select your best shots
- You may submit up to a total of 3 photographs into the competition for free submitted into any one Open category or spread across multiple categories.
- Step Four – Your images will automatically be shown in a live and public gallery for everyone to see
- Step Five - Your images will go through various pre-selection rounds by our officially selected 2011 Pre-Selection Committee, iStockphoto. iStockphoto’s Image Inspectors are just as passionate about imagery as we are and are dedicated to quality.
- Step Six - If one of your images are selected to go into the top 100, you will then be judged by the 2011 Honorary Judging Committee – members of the World Photographic Academy.
- Step Seven - A shortlist of up to ten amateur photographers per category will be announced in February 2011.
- Step Eight - The 10 Category Winners, will be showcased as part of the official 2011 Finalists exhibitions in London, be published in the 2011 winner’s book and be announced to the worldwide press as Sony World Photography Awards Category Winners in March, 2011.
- Step Nine - One grand prize winner will be selected from the 10 category winners by the 2011 Honorary Judging Committee and be awarded The Sony World Photography Awards Open Photographer of the Year.
- Step Ten – Smile if you have reached Step Ten – you deserve it! Along with all of the above, one lucky winner will also…
- Receive two return flights to London
- Receive two nights’ accommodation in a luxury London hotel
- Receive week-long passes to attend the World Photography Festival featuring screenings, workshops, exhibitions, talks and other events taking place throughout London in April
- Receive VIP tickets to attend the Gala Evening Awards Ceremony
- And finally… Come on stage to collect their prize of $5,000 and a Sony gift.
