For this week's Pick of the Pics, the below images were selected according to the attention and focus they grant to their theme. Our eye immediatley catches the main subject in each picture: the face behind the leaf, the gas station in the middle of a desertic land or the female skateboarder trying to avoid the sun with her arm, allowing us to easily understand the meaning and idea behing the shot.

This week we wanted to show the breadth of imagery – from subject matter to style to technique – entered into the Open competition over the past seven days. With unusual compositions, bold use of shadows and startling use of flash catching our eye, the collection of photographs we're sharing this week applaud those photographers wanting to show us something different. Whether it's a close up macro shot of exquisite bird feathers or an artful black & white portrait, these standout shots get a round of applause from the team at the World Photography Organisation.

Photography has always been a great way to provide a sense of escapism. From starry skies to rainy streets, these visually appealing images have all caught up our eye this week due to the feeling of freedom they convey. They are also a reminder of the current world we live in, as colourful as a hummingbird and as vast as the ocean but also, sometimes, unknown and daunting.
