Series description

On 18 December 2022, the Argentinian national football team won its third World Cup, after 36 years of waiting. Across the country, eager crowds came out into the streets to celebrate: men, women, children, elderly people and families displayed uncontrolled happiness, passion, pride and emotion. Two days later the champions arrived in the country and their procession drew more than four million people to Buenos Aires. I was part of both days as a fan and a photographer, submerged in a human sea of joy, hugs, singing, beer, water and ‘crazy snow’.

Biography

Since I was young I understood that I wanted to have many lives, that one life would not be enough to satisfy my desire to experience different realities. I was a lawyer, journalist, audiovisual producer, cultural manager, teacher and, for more than eight years now, my obsession is to go out with my camera and let myself be surprised by people, places, situations, serendipities and that kind of beautifully unpredictable things. I enjoy observing its dynamics and details, talking to people, forming bonds, and for all of that to permeate my work. I see everything transforming in front of me in combinations of people, lights, colors, shadows. Besides, I always felt like a fish in water among crowds, whether at a sporting event, a popular festival or a protest demonstration. That energy lifts me up.  If I have to define genres, I could say that I do street, documentary and social photography, although I do not care about these kinds of labels. I wander, I interact, I search and search for myself, that is all. At this stage, in this life, what interests me most is to continue transforming myself through these experiences and evolving along with my photography.

On 20 December 2022, millions of Argentines took to the streets of Buenos Aires to greet the team that had just been crowned World Champions. As an Argentinian fan and photographer I was privileged to be a part of this unique event and I simply could not stop capturing it with my camera. What I experienced was far beyond what I expected.
Blue Flares Painting the Party
Blue Flares Painting the Party
The celebration completely covered Avenida 9 de Julio in Buenos Aires, crossing the emblematic obelisk and reaching the southern zone, where a crowd advanced towards the 25 de Mayo highway, hoping to see their idols in person. The atmosphere was full of songs, and the light blue and white colours of Argentina mixed with the clear sky and the flares.
Human Highway and Helicopters
Human Highway and Helicopters
Shortly after the announcement that the Argentinian team’s players would wave from the top of the highway, thousands of people descended on the area and occupied it completely. Because of this, the team’s plans had to change, and their greeting was from helicopters that flew over the crowd that kept celebrating and waving to the sky.
Cup Atmosphere
Cup Atmosphere
December is midsummer in Buenos Aires, and the crowds were packed under the hot noon sun on Avenida 9 de Julio, which is dubbed ‘the widest avenue in the world’. None of that mattered in the face of the desire to celebrate. Garbage collection trucks helped by dousing people with water hoses, which was mixed with smoke from flares and makeshift food stalls on the pavement.
Choreography of the Climb
Choreography of the Climb
The sidewalk was not enough. People wanted to occupy every possible space – down, to the sides, up. Traffic lights, magazine kiosks and light poles were conquered, but the bus stop shelters were special. As people climbed to their roofs, those below pushed while those above took their hands and pulled.
Express Yourself
Express Yourself
Argentines express themselves a lot with their hands and gestures, and in this celebration it was that and much more. Shouting, jumping and all kinds of homemade costumes, hats, capes and masks were just some of the ways people demonstrated their collective happiness, without holding back. This created a delicious mix for those of us who love photojournalism and street photography.
Here, There and Everywhere
Here, There and Everywhere
On 18 and 20 December 2022, the roofs of the bus stops were a privileged setting to enjoy a view of Avenida 9 de Julio, which was packed with millions of people. The audience there was constantly rotating, but these prime locations were always sold out.
Buenos Aires Under the Crazy Snow
Buenos Aires Under the Crazy Snow
Following the World Cup victory, Argentina experienced collective days that will not be forgotten. As foam –‘crazy snow’ – fell, millions of people of all ages and social groups took to the streets to celebrate the country’s greatest sporting passion. These celebrations had been contained for years and crossed several generations.
