In the Darkness I Can See You
Giorgia Lisi
Series description

When developing this project, Giorgia Lisi knew she wanted to explore themes of nature and the human fear of the unknown, so with this idea in mind she started to shoot in the woods at night. Considering her own fears of the unknown, she came to realise they were rooted in the traditional folklore of southern Italy, where she grew up. This project therefore became an exploration of the southern Italian folkloric figure ‘Lu Mamau.’ This spiritual being lives where there is no light and kidnaps children who are too noisy and disobedient, putting them in his sack and taking them far away to his dark lair. With this series, Lisi examines the concept of control that is imposed on children from a very young age, and the ways this connects with the fear of the unknown. All of the photographs were taken at night in locations around The Hague in the Netherlands.

Biography

My name is Giorgia Lisi, I am 26 years old and I was born and raised in South Italy.
In my work I explore themes concerning the condition of the human being and how it is unconsciously affected by the dynamics of our contemporary society, staging the photographs in order to transform my imagination into images.

The white spots visible in the pictures appeared because it was starting to rain. Lisi directed the children to scream and jump around Lu Mamau, capturing the moment before the kidnapping.

There are no drawings or visual interpretations of Lu Mamau, so Lisi photographed it as she used to imagine it when she was a child.

Lisi told her subjects to have fun and make noise, because noisy children who disobey their parents are Lu Mamau’s victims. The white spots in the image were caused by rain, lit up by the photographer’s external flashes, which were emphasised during processing.

Lisi turned this representation of Lu Mamau into a negative image to create the impression of an immaterial unknown presence floating in the sky. This folkloristic figure is also related to darkness and absence of light.

Taken outdoors at night, Lisi wanted to photograph something abstract and difficult to define.

Lisi’s story of Lu Mamau stemmed from the idea of being afraid of the unknown. In this self-portrait, the photographer wanted to represent this notion by depicting someone with their eyes closed, unable to see.
