"Belonging to ourselves" by Sol Leonardi
One of the greatest taboos in Latin American society is women's sexuality, their pleasure and shape.
We have boundaries imposed on our bodies. We are sexualized very early to male tastes. We are forced to depilate, to wear makeup in order to appear more attractive, though male culture forces us to be extremely careful of men’s uncontrollable excitement.
Who cares about our sexuality, our needs and our consent? For decades, we have been denied self-awareness and our own pleasure. We are not just an object for pleasure and a target for men, we have the right to be free and to think and feel for ourselves.
Feminism has taught me that women’s pleasure is another step in our fight because, in order to live in an equal society, we must have the same rights as men. To live our sexuality freely, we have to be free to know our own bodies. It's time to empower ourselves, to reclaim our sexuality and creativity. It's time to belong to ourselves.
