One of the most characteristic symptoms of the time in which we live is the growing sense of loss of a better future, of a hypothetical tomorrow perceived as something promising and yet unknown. If we’re going to re-establish a healthy relationship with the plane, it is imperative to reflect on our attitude toward the future. In the 21st century we need to learn how to use our knowledge in a more sustainable way, find new ways to live on our planet and confront today’s critical environmental issues. Future Studies is an ongoing piece of research spanning more than ten years, aimed at triggering the viewer to join the critical debate on our precarious balance on Earth, and hopefully contribute to restoring hope for the future of mankind.

Luca Locatelli is an environmental photographer and film-maker focused on the relations between people, science-technology and the environment.

Locatelli produces his stories in collaboration with journalists, environmentalists, and scientists in order to further contextualize his research. Deeply rooted in documentary and journalistic production, his work revolves around the ‘making’ of the future. From 2013, his main focus has been to discover and document the most promising ways to live on earth when confronting today’s critical environmental issues. The aim of his work is to contribute to an open discussion about our future on the planet.

He produces stories with photography and multimedia, and his photographic work has been published in National Geographic Magazine, The New York Times Magazine, TIME, The New Yorker, Bloomberg Businessweek, and Geo Germany, among others.

Locatelli’s works have been exhibited and screened in various venues including the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, Somerset House, Les Rencontres d'Arles, Visa pour l'Image, Noorderlicht International Photography Festival, Getxophoto International Image Festival and Cortona On The Move.
