Paracetamol And Ibuprofen
Lucas Urenda
Series description

These images come from my series Paracetamol e Ibuprofeno (Paracetamol and Ibuprofen), which serves as the biography of a person with AIDS in Chile. Psychiatry, shelters, marginal brothels and sexuality are some of the themes that converge in this work, which follows a man known as ‘Absent’. Through images and handwritten text narrated by the protagonist himself, we delve into the marginality that surrounds a man with HIV whose childhood was marked by untreated sexual abuse. Predestined to live on the street, the project shows the prevailing precariousness of his situation and his desire to reverse his destiny through palliative care and psychological help. ‘I am a good person. I have made mistakes, but I have never wanted to hurt anyone. Like all humans I deserve to live, although all the time I have thought the opposite. I never created a purpose in life.’

Father's photo
Father's photo
"Absent" shows us a photograph of his father when he did his "military service". He was never able to tell his father about the sexual abuse he was receiving, as he committed suicide when "absent" was only 14 years old.
Guala's portrait
Guala's portrait
Portrait of Guala, transgender, after smoking cocaine base paste in one of the dark rooms of the Noa Noa. When "absent" told his family about the sexual abuse he was receiving, a family breakdown occurs and he is blamed for dividing the family. At that moment and feeling guilty, "absent" took to the street as a way to leave that guilt behind and went to live at the Noa Noa, as they called that place that was actually a cité.

Short-stay psychiatric hospital
Short-stay psychiatric hospital
image of one of the psychiatric facility's rooms. When there are strong attacks of anxiety, anger or other violent attacks, people are locked in these rooms that have padded walls so that they do not hurt themselves against the wall and a mattress until the painkillers take effect. Absentee fell into the place to deal with the "ghosts" of the past that haunted him and to "cleanse" himself of hard drugs. The place is called short stay as it is the previous step before falling into the other psychiatric facility. Only people who are too violent are the ones who stay longer in the place, due to the strength of their treatment.
