The Power of Presence

The Sony World Photography Awards Open competition celebrates the strength of the single image, a photograph’s ability to capture and distil a singular moment that resonates with a universal narrative.

This week’s Entries of the Week demonstrate that the most compelling visual narratives are often found not in chaos and noise, but in moments of profound solitude, where the subject is given monumental weight by its surroundings.

The compositional work often relies on a striking contrast between the subject and the scale of its environment. Whether the subject is human, animal, or object, the photographer employs the expanse of the frame to emphasise its singular presence. These images, diverse in their subject matter and country of origin, collectively prove that composition and light are the fundamental tools for storytelling. 

Our monthly Entries of the Week winner receives:
