A Little Strange, A Little Spooky: Entries of the Week

Halloween has arrived, and this week's Entries of the Week takes a turn towards the strange and mysterious. From eerie portraits and abandoned places to dramatic skies and creatures that look straight out of a horror film, these ten photographs show how easily the familiar can become unsettling.

Behind the spooky atmosphere are some interesting stories. In Cambridge, an unexpected evening fog sent a photographer rushing outside to capture the glow of a streetlamp through the trees. Near Athens, a praying mantis takes on an almost otherworldly appearance thanks to some carefully placed red foil and creative lighting. Elsewhere, a young girl stands fearlessly at the entrance to an old ironworks tunnel, clutching a childhood teddy bear, while a portrait lit entirely by a lantern shows just how much atmosphere can be created with a single light source.

There's also room for a little Halloween fun, with a miniature T. rex making an appearance, alongside striking portraits inspired by the imagery of death and remembrance. And for those who prefer their thrills courtesy of nature, lightning over Sydney and the northern lights above an Irish church provide plenty of drama. A Halloween selection with a few surprises, and proof that sometimes the most extraordinary scenes don't need any special effects.
