In Andalusia, Spain, the traditional Easter processions are a fascinating event to watch. The different brotherhoods (Hermandades) with their uniformed brothers (cofrades) are an everyday sight during the holy week, Semana Santa. Central elements of the processions are the heavy wooden frames (pasos) showing biblical scenes with one or more statues. These are carried through the streets by volunteer paso carriers underneath – usually one only sees their feet, but sometimes during the rare breaks one gets an impression of the tough job they have.

The Hakata Gion Yamakasa is a festival celebrated in the 1st half of July in Fukuoka City, the largest city in Japan’s southwestern island of Kyushu. Several teams of men would race around the city before the break of dawn, carrying one-ton wooden floats known as the Kakiyama. The festival is believed to have an 800-year history, and attracts up to a million spectators each year. It was designated an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Japan in 1979.

The diverse array of vending machines and photo ID machines is unique to Japanese culture. I felt that a woman coming out of this photo booth in Shibuya, Tokyo, with the two vending machines to the side, would create a stylish scene. Ki-Re-i means ‘beautiful’ in Japanese.
