Twende Ziwani (Let’s go to the Lake)
Alvin Kamau
Image description

This editorial photoshoot was inspired by haute couture fashion culture. The photograph was taken in a studio in Nairobi, Kenya. ‘Twende Ziwani' is Swahili for 'Let's go to the Lake'. The model's pose shows him carrying his shoes on his shoulders while looking to his side. The title also refers to Lake Victoria, the largest lake in Africa and the source of the Nile River.

August Bank Holiday 1
Holidaymakers shelter from a summer downpour on a wet Bank Holiday (a UK public holiday), under the eaves of seafront beach huts in Swanage, England. Each hut seems to accommodate a different set of people: a family, three friends, a mother and baby, and strangers sharing the last remaining sheltered space available. I ventured out into the torrential rain under an umbrella to capture the scene.

A participant jumps through the ice in Lake Huron at the annual Perchville festival in Tawas, Michigan. In 2023 spectators were asked to watch from the shore, as the ice was so thin it couldn’t support a crowd. At just seven per cent coverage, ice on all five of the Great Lakes was well below the expected 35-40 per cent – an ominous sign that climate change is affecting our most beloved environments and pastimes.

The Lady in Red
I met this lady in red during a walk on the Naples seafront. On sunny days Neapolitans spend their time with friends and family on the beaches or the seaside docks.

I shot this during the 2023 Edinburg Ole Time Festival. Edinburg is a small town in rural Virginia where a friend of mine lives. There was a parade, and this is a street portrait of a young beauty contestant.

I travelled to Cokato, Minnesota, to photograph local people attending the Cokato Corn festival. I took my photographs in Gust Akerlund’s Photography Studio, which was opened by a Swedish immigrant, August Bernard (Gust) Akerlund, in 1905.
