Rider Getting Down and Dirty
Samuel Andersen
Image description

A rider passes through a muddy part of the course at the Norwegian National Championships in Hafjell Bike Park, Norway. As I was using an 11mm fisheye lens I needed to get really close to get this shot, and both myself and my gear ended up getting splashed. It was worth it though, as the backlighting from this angle was very effective.

Running in Clouds
Photographing these galloping horses with a drone proved to be very challenging – smoke and dust were everywhere, and I had no idea where the horses would go and what they would do – but the result is like they are running in clouds.

Touché
Taken during the British Fencing Senior Championship 2023, which was held at the Lee Valley Athletics Centre in north London. I used a slow shutter speed to enhance the sense of movement as the fencers lunged and parried on the piste.
The Turning White Horse
Sarah Wouters
The Turning White Horse
During a trip to Cappadocia, Turkey, I went to Göreme valley early in the morning to photograph the hot air balloons taking off near the horse stables. The horses were running around, which enabled me to capture this image.

Torch War
Obor-oboran, or ‘torch war’, is a traditional ceremony held by the people of Indonesia’s Jepara regency, especially those from Tegalsambi village in the Tahunan district.
Love Again
Matteo Baronio
Love Again
As I was preparing to leave London, after many years of memories, laughter and tears, I had the feeling that the National Gallery wanted to show me one last thing before I go. The people in the picture fell in love, danced, hugged and fell in love again. I was patient, trying to hold them for a moment in time before it goes. London is for everyone who loves falling in love; falling for its beauty.
Flock of Sheep
Serkan Dogus
Flock of Sheep
Every day in the Tatvan district of Bitlis, Turkey, hundreds of sheep make a dusty journey to reach the pasture. Joining the dusty journey and photographing them was an indescribable feeling.

A SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket transits the Moon on 28 December 2023, taking the ‘secretive’ X-37B into orbit, which has been the subject of debate.
Vigor of the Sacred Festival

Vigor of the Sacred Festival

This powerful image captures a moment of uninhibited exuberance during the Saidai-ji Eyo festival. Wearing traditional headbands and minimal clothing, these men are immersed in the ritual’s water purification. The central figure, his arms raised in a spirited gesture, epitomises the collective joy and abandon.

Thusitha Jayasundara
Airborne
I took this at Hikkaduwa in Sri Lanka. There was a fantastic sunset and a lot of people were surfing, so I grabbed my camera and went to photograph the action. I tracked this kid as he showed off his skills and captured this moment.
That’s Baseball

That’s Baseball
This picture was taken on 22 July 2023 at the U-15 European Baseball Championship in Trnava, Slovakia, during the bronze medal match France vs Czechia. I accompanied my son, Baptiste, who plays for the French national team. I observed the game, the light and captured the moment when the ball crashed into the glove in a plume of dust and chalk. It's a very characteristic image of baseball.
