Breathe
This image forms part of the photographer’s series, Portrait of a Poet, and depicts Manka Menga (aka Dr Winifrida John Mmasi MD). She is currently a multi-disciplinary artist whose deliberately sensual and blasphemous poetry challenges the scope of self-expression afforded to African women and queer people. The lines visible on her face are the result of a daily morning ritual that simultaneously honours the memory of her late grandmother and references the traditional ritual of scarification from her family’s home region.
