Breaking the Pattern: Entries of the Week

Photography often begins with an attempt to bring order to what is in front of us: choosing a frame, finding a rhythm, deciding what stays in and what disappears beyond its edges. Yet some of the most compelling photographs emerge when that order starts to break down.

This week’s selection moves between control and unpredictability. Human-made structures create patterns, boundaries and systems, while weather, wildlife and the natural world introduce their own logic. Elsewhere, a fleeting encounter or an unexpected detail becomes the thing that reorganises the entire frame.

There is a sense of interruption running through these photographs. A single figure crosses an otherwise empty landscape. An animal occupies a carefully constructed environment. Repetition is broken by one small point of difference. Even scenes shaped by extreme conditions can reveal surprising moments of balance.

Together, the images show how photographers can use composition not simply to make sense of the world, but to draw attention to the moments when it refuses to behave as expected.
