A Week of Big Landscapes and Small Details: Entries of the Week

This week’s selection covers a lot of ground, from a solar eclipse over northern Spain and riders crossing the mountains of Kyrgyzstan to sailing in China and camels moving along the coast of Oman.

Some of these photographs depend on being there at exactly the right time. Birds cross the sky as an arm reaches towards them, a dragonfly remains still after a night of rain, and the Moon moves in front of the Sun above a field of sunflowers. In others, photographers take a more experimental approach, using blur, layering, high contrast and abstraction to push the image away from straightforward documentation.

There is plenty of variety in subject and technique, as well as scale. We move from a close-up view of a dragonfly’s compound eyes to landscapes where people and animals occupy only a tiny part of the frame. Portraiture, sport, travel, wildlife, and creative photography all find a place in this week’s ten images.
