Creators for the Planet

Creators for the Planet is a global year-round engagement programme set up to spotlight and amplify creators' stories promoting prosperity and peace for people and the planet. Set up by Creo and developed in collaboration with the United Nations Foundation and Sony Pictures, Creators for the Planet aims to mobilise and inspire people to Act Now through photography and film.

The programme comprises two awards: the Sony World Photography Awards Sustainability Prize and the Sony Future Filmmaker Awards Environment category. The work entered into each of these initiatives are required to focus on one (or more) of the eight Environment focused Sustainable Development Goals: Zero Hunger; Quality Education; Clean Water and Sanitation; Affordable and Clean Energy; Responsible Consumption and Reduction; Climate Action; Life Below Water; and Life on Land. Creators for the Planet stems from Picture This, an initiative that was created by the World Photography Organisation in association with Sony Pictures and the United Nations Foundation.

Sustainability Prize, Sony World Photography Awards

The Sustainability Prize is an initiative within the Sony World Photography Awards. Created to recognise the stories, people and organisations whose actions highlight one of the environment-focused Sustainable Development Goals, the winner receives a $5,000 cash prize and presentation of their project as part of the Sony World Photography Awards 2023 exhibition in London. Selected images from their project will also be included in the Sony World Photography Awards book.

Alessandro Cinque (Italy) is announced as the first-ever winner of the Sony World Photography Awards 2023 Sustainability Prize for his series Atrapanieblas (Fog Nets). The series documents an innovative solution helping to tackle chronic water shortages in Lima, Peru. Cinque shows how fog nets are used to catch droplets of airborne moisture and can collect about 200 litres (53 gallons) of water per day for local residents.
